We’ve all heard that how we talk to ourselves directly affects our self-esteem.
As true as this is, I believe there’s an important part of the story that is left out.
It’s not just how we talk to ourselves.
It’s also how we treat ourselves.
By that I mean,
Do you always give yourself second best?
Do you ever ‘treat’ yourself?
I know most of us have limited funds but we can still give ourselves a special treat from time to time.
For example, the night before an important interview, which I had just flown in for, I had two choices for dinner:
Burger King or
A great restaurant in Bedminster whose name eludes me.
I can tell you with a smile that I enjoyed oysters on the half shell with a wonderful cocktail sauce with just the right mix of horseradish and ketchup.
This was followed by a glass of champagne and a great steak.
Lest you think I’m a 24/7 gourmand, (a person who enjoys eating and often eats too much), that dinner occurred on May 21, 1989.
Oh and by the way, I ended up working for that employer for 24 years.
Today, some 31 years later, as I celebrate the 22nd anniversary of my 39th birthday, I decided to treat myself to breakfast at Tripps at 9th and 22nd in St. Pete.
That meant a wonderful six egg omelet stuffed with spinach, mushrooms and feta cheese.
Of course, meals are more enjoyable when they bite back so that omelet would be naked without a coat of Avery Island’s finest tabasco sauce.
And what omelet isn’t lonely without a freshly toasted crunchy slice of wheat bread smothered with strawberry jam and a bowl of fresh fruit so I can tell my wife I’m eating healthy.
So, go on and treat yourself.
Warm yourself up with a nice cappuccino covered with cinnamon or one of those special frap-a-whatever drinks that Starbucks makes.
If you haven’t had a box of Godiva’s recently, splurge or savor a wonderful milk chocolate nougat (a candy made from sugar or honey, nuts, and egg white) Toblerone bar (in the beige triangular box) or better yet, bite off a piece of a frozen bittersweet chocolate Toblerone bar (in the dark green triangular box), found at fine stores everywhere.
(While you’re savoring it, look for the bear hidden on the Matterhorn on the box. The bear stands for Bern where Toblerone is made.)
You deserve it.
Besides deserving it, treating yourself, that is doing something you want to do, will make it much easier to do all of those things you don’t want to do.
