Is Your Label, aka Title, Preventing You From Landing Your Dream Job?

Posted by

I’ll never forget when a VP told me, “Clark, you’re Reports.”

I remained silent because I knew, in her eyes, I was nothing more than ‘Reports.’

A quick scan of my LinkedIn profile reveals what she was missing…

Author, Business Planner, Project Manager, Training Documentation, Factory Forecasting. Process Analyst. Financial Analyst.

A former VP’s LinkedIn Recommendation said it best:

He had the skills to play in 3-4 different positions on the soccer field and was able to adapt to the unique needs of the organization.

Those 101 words weren’t written to impress you.

They were written to demonstrate the impact labels can have on our lives.

In today’s economy,

Recognizing the breadth of our skills

and the many titles where those skills are needed

can mean the difference between employment and unemployment.

If you only use one label to describe what you have to offer, your job prospects will be slimmer.

A close friend lost his job in 2002, the same time I did. He decided to look for ‘Product Manager’ roles just like the one he used to have. He hasn’t been hired since.

My friend’s decision limited the number of jobs available to him.

I’ve been working since 1989 and while roles were eliminated from time to time, there were always new roles where my skills were a good match.

I never limited myself to the label used to describe my last position.

Instead, I know that I bring unique skills that have enabled me to be successful in multiple roles.

So, the point I’m making is limiting ourselves to the labels our employers give us is not a recipe for long term employment.

Understanding that we each bring unique skills to the table and

there are a variety of roles with a variety of labels (titles) where those skills are needed

will increase our likelihood of long term employment.

I hope you found this helpful.
